FIMI Project Certification Approved
On the FIMI project stakeholder conference call today, it was officially announced that the Army Corps has approved the Real Estate Certification for Contract 3A, completing 18 months of real estate work conducted by the County and NYSDEC.
Phase 3A (from Seaview to Fair Harbor) will place an estimated 1,400,000 cubic yards of sand as a dune and berm system along this stretch of beach. Bids to contract for the work will be submitted by May 2016, and contract will be awarded in June 2016.
Although the original plans called for the 3A project in get started in July, many concerns have been raised about implementing this major construction project at the height of the crowded summer season. These issues include interference with beach use by visitors, residents and their guests; concern over the health and safety issues raised by so much heavy equipment on our beaches, and the potential negative impact on the economy quality of life in the affected communities.
The FIMI project team ( USACE, NYSDEC, Suffolk County and FINS) has therefore made the decision to begin actual construction of the dune on or after September 19, 2016. The 3A project is expected to be completed by the end of March 2017.
